China’s worst serial killers: a litany of evil through history

Image
The latest arrest of an alleged serial killer in northwestern Gansu province has rekindled memories of other horrific murderers in China, many of which also involved robbery and rape. A young woman in China claims she was tricked into taking a job at a cosmetic surgery company, only for her employer to pressure her into getting a nose job and incurring 25,000 yuan (US$3,500) in debt. The woman, surnamed Chen, accepted a position as a receptionist with the company on November 21, with her salary being 4,100 (US$560) per month. During the interview, the hiring staff asked questions about her interest in cosmetic surgery, which Chen initially thought were routine because “it’s a cosmetic surgery company, so those questions didn’t seem strange.” However, after signing the employment contract, two employees consistently pressured Chen into getting a cosmetic procedure, suggesting it would boost her career prospects. Chen would try to push back by pointing out that she had not yet graduated...

Trapped in terror: Three Ukrainian women held hostage by Russian soldiers speak out

Image
On March 3, Russian forces took hold of Yahidne, a small village outside of Chernihiv, Ukraine, and held the villagers captive in a school basement for 25 harrowing days. Ukrainian survivors believe at least 20 people died during the month-long Russian occupation, including 11 elderly villagers who passed away while inside the basement. No official death toll has been released by Ukrainian officials. Surviving off limited food and forced to go to the bathroom in buckets, men, women and children huddled together — four people per square meter — as Russian forces ransacked and destroyed their homes. Adults slept sitting up, while mothers used their bodies as makeshift beds for their children. The youngest Ukrainian held captive was just 2 months old. To keep track of time, villagers etched the passing days into one of the basement walls. TODAY Parents spoke, through a translator, to three Ukrainian women who were held captive by Russian troops in Yahidne and described, in detail, the co...

These are 34 of the most Ruthless leaders in history

Image
Throughout the course of history, oppressive leaders have regrettably outnumbered those who govern benevolently. To compile a list of 34 of the cruelest dictators of all time, 24/7 Tempo reviewed dozens of historical sources such as History.com and Britannica. This compilation covers millennia, ranging from historical despots like Phalaris of Acragas to contemporary dictators like Hitler and Stalin. While the majority are male, a handful of women, including China’s Wu Zetian, are featured for ruthlessly eliminating rivals. Regrettably, our compilation suggests that leaders have not become nicer over time. A significant portion of the entries, precisely half, originates from the 20th century, featuring some of the most infamous figures in history. Tragically, this era could be labeled as a century marked by mass murder, with the names of Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, and Mao Zedong etched in blood on the pages of history.  (These are the most famous female rulers in history

Nativity-like scene statues' are unearthed in the ancient Roman pagan city of Pompeii

Image
Archaeologists said the statues look like those used in the Nativity scene But the figurines were to worship a cult goddess in ancient rituals  Archaeologists have unearthed nativity-like scene statues in the ancient ruins of the Roman pagan city of Pompeii. Approximately 13 figurines were found in what was once a home, and while the terracotta pieces mirror a Christian scene, they were used in an ancient cult ritual. The miniature clay sculptures are about five inches high and found upright on a horizontal plane, probably a shelf that once hung inside the home. Researchers determined the artifacts were to pay homage to the cult goddess Cybele, known for being the mother of the gods, and Attis, a mortal she fell in love with. Some statues were human figures, while others included a chicken head and a pine cone.  Two thousand years ago, Pompeii, which lies 14 miles southeast of Naples, was a buzzing city with some 15,000 residents before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroye...

South Bay history: How chinchillas from the Andes made their way to Lennox

Image
The Chincha tribe lived high in the Andes mountains in South America. When Spanish explorers came upon the tribe in the 1500s, they were intrigued by the robes the Chincha wore, which had been crafted from the skins of small furry animals found only high up in the mountains of Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The Spaniards named the animals, who were slightly larger than chipmunks, “chinchillas” — or little Chinchas. They quickly realized the potential value of their pelts, which became highly desired once garments made from chinchillas were introduced into European high society. Unfortunately for the chinchillas, it took as many as 150 of them to fashion a coat. As the demand for the expensive fur increased, the supply of animals began to be depleted. By the late 1800s, the animals hovered on the brink of extinction. Chile, Peru and Bolivia finally signed a treaty banning the trapping of chinchillas and the exporting of their pelts in 1910. But by then, the cute little rodents had...

Skeleton of Four Breasted Woman Discovered

Image
Byram, NJ. Recent renovations of a section of  Route 80 westbound have uncovered the remains of what archeologists believe to be the first solid evidence of the legendary “four breasted woman” spoken of in Lenni Lenape folklore. Dr. Kevin Spitzkiel, adjunct professor of archeology at the nearby Centenary College stated “This is the breakthrough we’ve been looking for all these years. Ever since I was a boy growing up in Warren County I heard tales of a clan of four breasted women.  Even the men had four nipples.” Road crews were digging up part of the highway when they found several human bones.  They called local State Troopers immediately.  Once the Troopers recognized this was not a fresh crime scene, they called for Dr Spitzkiel.  He is known in the area as the “Skeleton Guy” His interest in the human skeleton is massive. He can  often be seen driving around town with a lifesize skeleton replica in the passenger seat of his car. “The interesting part o...

The death penalty is still very much alive

Image
Despite the repeated intervention of international organisations, the death penalty is being handed down in courts in countries across the world, on a daily basis. Having faced the death sentence on several occasions, Tintin has direct experience of this dreadful punishment. Let us take a look at the origins, history and modern-day use of this brutal punitive measure. Brought back into use in the United States in 1977, today capital punishment is common In the year 2007 alone, some 1252 executions were recorded in 24 countries, and at least 3347 people were condemned to death in 51 countries. This figure is likely to be inaccurate as it does not take into account the many executions which take place outside of the public eye. The whole world seems to be implicated: the death penalty is not only a state-controlled punishment but is also practised by terrorists. Sometimes these executions are highly publicised such as the televised 'death sentence' (murder) of journalist Daniel ...

Eastern Encounters: Ilia Repin's Orientalist Aesthetics Abroad and at Home

Image
This essay examines Ilia Repin's sustained engagement with European Orientalist painting and its impact on his oeuvre. Through close readings of three of his major works, Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom (1876), Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan (1885), and Zaporozhian Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Turkish Sultan (1880–91), it argues that Repin deployed Eastern motifs in order to unsettle entrenched East/West and self/other binaries that were prevalent in the Russian imperial context. A celebrated figure of the Russian national school, Repin was born and raised in Ukraine, and frequently turned to Ukrainian themes and subjects in his art. Considering Russia's turbulent political atmosphere in the 1880s and 1890s, and the evolving separation of Ukrainian and Russian imperial identities during this time, this essay posits that Repin harnessed the Orientalist idiom as a means to critique the Russian state, and to articulate an anti-imperial and anti-autocratic position. Detail...
