U.S. man accused of kidnapping, rape of Edmonton girl appears in Oregon court

The U.S. suspect accused of kidnapping and committing sexual offences against a 13-year-old Edmonton girl was arraigned in Oregon City, Ore. Tuesday.

Noah Madrano, 40, appeared in Clackamas County Circuit Court. He faces state charges of kidnapping, rape and sexual abuse.

Deputy district attorney Adrienne Chin-Perez requested bail be set at $500,000.

"The reason for that is the aggravated nature of the facts that are alleged," she said in court.

"In this case, the state is alleging that defendant targeted a 12-year-old child in Canada, coerced her over the course of a year, went up to Canada to retrieve and kidnap the child."

There are also allegations that Madrano threatened to kill the girl, Chin-Perez said.

Participating via video conference, Madrano shook his head slightly from side to side while Chin-Perez was speaking.

Madrano remains in custody. His bail was set at $500,000.

In an email Tuesday, Clackamas County chief deputy district attorney Chris Owen said United States federal charges are also expected to be laid.

Madrano did not yet have a lawyer on Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 12.

Oregon City is about 20 kilometres southeast of Portland, Ore.

The girl was reported missing on June 24 after she did not attend school or return to her Edmonton home that afternoon.

Edmonton Police Service announced Saturday she had been found in Oregon. The girl was with the suspect, EPS Insp. Brent Dahlseide said at a news conference.

The girl was reunited with her family and has returned home, her father said Monday. CBC is not identifying the girl.
