Today's Headlines: Protest breaks out in Nasarawa over removal of Gov Sule, Four Injured In Lagos Crash

Protests have broken out in Akwanga and some other parts of Nasarawa State over the judgment of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal (GEPT) in Lafia.
Supporters of the All Progressives Congress APC and those loyal to Governor Sule took to the streets to express displeasure over what they called injustice done to the governor by the Tribunal.

Recall that the Tribunal on Monday, 2nd of October 2023, ruled that Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party was the lawful winner of the March 18 polls, rendering the incumbent Governor an illegitimate occupant of the governorship seat in the state.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, the APC and Sule rejected the judgement and instructed its legal team to proceed to the appellate court for an appeal.

In support of the Governor, some party stakeholders took to the streets of Akwanga LG for a solidarity march, carrying banners with inscriptions like; “Akwanga people stand with the dissenting judgment”, among others.

Four persons were injured in a crash that occurred on the Otedola Bridge, inward Berger along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that two vehicles, which include a Mazda bus and a car, were involved in the crash that occurred around 2.45pm.

It was learnt that those injured in the crash were taken to the emergency ward at Ojota Hospital in the state.

The Lagos Sector Commander, FRSC, Babatunde Farinloye, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said, “There was an accident and four people were injured. The injured persons have been taken to Ojota Hospital.”

Meanwhile, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Sunday apprehended a driver, Safara Oladiji, for damaging a truck barrier at the Dorman-Long Bridge at Surulere inwards Ikorodu Road.

The decision by the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) to dialogue with the Federal Government over referendum has elicited reactions from some Igbo leaders.

The leaders, who insisted on political dialogue to end agitations by some Southeast groups, including IPOB, said no sensible Igbo would want the Southeast to exit Nigeria.

The leaders include a one-time Ebonyi State Information Commissioner Chief Abia Onyike; President -General of the Coalition of Southeast Youth Leaders (COSEYL), Goodluck Ibem, a political analyst, Williams Iheakolam an Ohanaeze Ndigbo official as well as an elder statesman, who asked not to be named. IPOB Spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said in a statement on Saturday said the group remained ”open for negotiations and dialogue on peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria through a United Nations -supervised referendum

The Gombe State Police Command on Sunday confirmed the kidnap of two persons in the Shabewa community of Dukku Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mahid Abubakar, confirmed this in an interview with our correspondent.

Abubakar said the command would partner with local vigilante groups to ensure their timely release.

According to him, the state Commissioner of Police, Oqua Etim, has deployed operatives who would ensure that the two captives are released unhurt.

He said, “We have confirmed the abduction of a male and a female from the Shabewa community of Dukku Local Government Area.

“The Commissioner of Police has deployed an operational team to work alongside the vigilante group to rescue the victims unhurt. They are presently in the bush in chase of the criminals.”
