Today's Headlines: Israeli military destroys Hamas radar system in air strikes on Gaza, Bandits kill village head, kidnap scores in Niger
The Israeli Air Force has said it destroyed a radar system used by Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, during attacks on the coastal enclave.
Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said this in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
“Fighter jets destroyed an advanced detection system developed by the Hamas terrorist organisation that was used to detect aircraft over the Gaza Strip,” the tweet read.
The IDF said that Hamas, over the years, had developed a high-quality camera network hidden in water tanks on rooftops throughout the Gaza Strip.
The military said the network was destroyed within minutes with attacks on various targets on Tuesday.
Suspected bandits have killed Malam Usman Sarki, the Village Head of Zazzaga in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) a community leader, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen in Munya that the suspected bandits launched the attack on Zazzaga and adjoining communities on Tuesday night.
The source said an unspecified number of farmers, including women, were also kidnapped.
The source said, “The attack was launched in the night on Tuesday. They shot the village Head of Zazzaga, Malam Usman Sarki, dead and kidnapped many others.
”For now, we cannot give the exact number of people they took away. They also rustled many cattle, goats and sheep belonging to us.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident.
Abiodun, however, said that he was yet to get the full details of the alleged attack by the suspected bandits.
Over 260,000 people displaced in Gaza, says UN
The United Nations has said over 260,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip, as heavy Israeli bombardments from the air, land and sea continue to hit the Palestinian enclave.
It added that fierce fighting has left thousands dead on both sides since Hamas launched a surprise assault on Saturday, spurring Israel’s reprisal bombing campaign.
“Over 263,934 people in Gaza are believed to have fled their homes,” said UN humanitarian agency OCHA said in an update Tuesday, warning that “this number is expected to rise further”.
Harmattan: Kaduna Fire Service cautions residents on fire incidents
The Federal Fire Service, Kaduna State Command, on Wednesday, warned the state’s residents of possible fire incidents during the harmattan season.
The state fire commander, Sadiq Usman, who made this known in a statement, said the focus was to safeguard lives and property as climate-related incidents continued to rise in Nigeria.
He said the call was necessary as a combination of dropping temperatures, strong winds, and increased use of heating sources during the season, significantly increased the risk of fires and related emergencies.
Usman said the Federal Fire Service was taking proactive measures by activating its early warnings to prevent fire disasters in the harmattan season.
He stressed that the significance of early warning systems and early actions was to avert humanitarian crises, particularly in vulnerable and remote areas.
