Man who raped teenage girl in mine shaft faces more charges

AN EVIL rapist who imprisoned a teenage sex slave in a mine shaft has been charged over two more rapes on young girls in the 1980s.

The man, who cannot be named, was jailed for 17 years in December 1999 for luring a Ballarat schoolgirl, 16, into an underground dungeon and repeatedly raping her over 19 hours in November 1998.

Now 58, he appeared this morning in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, where police are seeking to obtain a DNA sample.

A police source told the Herald Sun the man now faces 15 charges, including two counts of rape, for crimes he allegedly committed in the 1980s.

It is understood he is eligible for parole in December.

During a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing in 2008, the tribunal heard shocking details of his 1998 attack.

The victim’s terrified mother had reported her daughter missing two hours after she failed to turn up at a designated meeting place on November 27, 1998.

She told police the man had floated the possibility of giving her daughter a part-time job, and gave police the man’s business card.

Police interviewed his housemates and discovered he had fantasised about imprisoning a woman in a cave.

They found the man and the girl- who had been handcuffed, gagged and bound- after crawling through 70 metres of tunnels in Black Hill.

It was the second time the man had been convicted for abducting a teenager.

He was jailed in 1990 for locking another teenage girl in the boot of his car.

At the 1999 hearing, the man pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one of false imprisonment, but later claimed he was coerced by police and was innocent.

He is expected back in court tomorrow for a filing hearing.
