Isreal-Hamas War: Israeli Strike at Gaza Church Leaves Several Dead and Injured


On Thursday, the Hamas-controlled interior ministry reported that several people, who had sought shelter in a church compound in Gaza, lost their lives and sustained injuries following an Israeli strike. The strike caused casualties within the compound of the Greek Orthodox Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City, as confirmed by the ministry.
According to Vanguard, Eyewitnesses on the ground reported that the strike not only damaged the church's facade but also caused an adjacent building to collapse. However, many of the injured individuals were promptly evacuated to hospitals for medical attention.

The Saint Porphyrius Church, the oldest church still in use in Gaza, is situated in the historic neighborhood of Gaza City.The church is located near the Al-Ahli Arab hospital, which was previously hit by a deadly airstrike on Tuesday.

The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed its strong condemnation of the strike on its church compound, describing it as a "war crime." They stated that targeting churches and their institutions, which provide shelter for innocent citizens, particularly children and women who have lost their homes due to Israeli airstrikes, should not be ignored.

Both sides in the ongoing conflict have been accusing each other for the casualties and damage caused. However, at this moment, neither the source of the strike nor the exact death toll has been verified.

Hamas has accused Israel of targeting the hospital during its extensive bombing campaign. In contrast, Israel's military has asserted that a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket was responsible.

The Gaza Strip has faced a relentless onslaught of Israeli airstrikes in retaliation for a Hamas militant attack on October 7, which Israel claims resulted in the deaths of at least 1,400 people,. According to the Hamas health ministry, Israeli bombing has resulted in the deaths of at least 3,785 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with the majority being civilians.
