Britain past in photo and history

The first British conviction of murder based upon fingerprint evidence, but before you get all patriotic the French had a murder fingerprint 13 years before us.
On 27th March 1905 Chapman’s Oil and Paint Stores of Deptford were broken into. Seventy-one year old shop manager Thomas Farrow and his wife were vicously beaten to death with lead weighted rope coshes that had been left at the scenes ... two stocking masks had also been left at the scene... two masks and weapons equalled two assailants. The shops cashbox had been forced and the contents of £13 (£1,500 today) taken ... but there was a smudged bloody fingerprint inside the cashbox. The print did not match any of the 80k that Scotland Yard had on file so the police needed a suspect to match them against ... luckily several witnesses had seen two men in brown overcoats hanging about in the afternoon bfore the burglary ... two of the witnesses recognised them... Albert and Alfred Stratton twin brothers, local criminals. Police knew Annie Cromarty, girlfriend of Albert, who told them that on the day after the robbery Alfred had disposed of a brown overcoat and shoes, she also told them about a hiding place near a waterworks where police found £4 in notes.
On April 2nd the Strattons were arrested... Alfred’s right thumb matched the bloody thumbprint in the cashboxcash box, both were charged and held for trial.
On 5th May both bothers wstood trial at the Old Bailey and it turned into battle to accept fingerprint evidence as proof of identity. This alone was quite interesting but to not bore you I will just say that finferprint evidence was accepted as factual standard from this point on and became the ’stated case’ in this form of identification evidence.
On 6th May 1905 both brothers were convicted of murder.
On 28th May 1905 both brothers were hanged.
Crime to punishment two months ... how it should happen
The exhibits in this trial, pictures of the Strattons at their trial can be seen at Scotland Yard’s Black Museum ...note the heavy bloodstaing on one of the coshes .... a recommended day out ... by appointment only..
