Daughter Asks Doctor to Turn Her Dad’s Life Support Off, He Suddenly Opens His Eyes
Ava's family was distraught when they realized their dad may never be taken off life support. She didn't want that for him, so she asked the doctor to pull him off. That's when her dad's eyes opened, but it wasn't the kind of miracle one would expect.
Ava wiped a tear as she crossed her arms in the waiting room. A few hours ago, her mother, Annmarie, had called with the news of her father Robert's terrible car accident. She and her brother, Nathan, had arrived at the same time at the hospital
Their father was rushed into surgery, and they all waited for some news. Ava couldn't imagine losing her father, no matter how much they hadn't seen eye-to-eye over the years. They fought often, mainly because he usually favored Nathan.

He didn't have any issue paying for his son's college education, but when it was time for Ava to go to law school, Robert said it was too expensive. Their family had always been upper middle class, so money wasn't an issue. His refusal to pay for her college had splintered their family.
"It's my money. Not yours. I get to decide whose college I pay for, so you'll just have to figure it out on your own," he said finally. His eyes were hard and cold, even as Ava cried.
Ava took out student loans and got through college as one of the top students in her class. She landed a great job immediately and started paying back her loans as soon as possible. In a few years, she was debt-free and finally started enjoying the fruits of her labor.
She had somewhat reconnected with her parents by then. They sometimes invited her to dinner, but one night, Robert saw her name-brand bracelet and made a comment.
"How much did you spend on that? I swear, women will waste money on anything," he grumbled. Ava stared at him, then at her mother and brother. None of them said anything.
So, she left that dinner and didn't see them again until the phone call came. She held her mother's hand and squeezed.
Thank you for coming, Ava," Annmarie said. "I know it's been rough the past few years."
"Shush, Mom. Let's just wait for the doctor," she shook her head. She was momentarily distracted by Nathan, messing with the vending machine.
An hour later, the doctor, a long-time family friend, came out. "Mrs. Franklin, your husband is out of surgery. But I must warn you. He's on life support, and we can't be certain of what will happen now," Dr. Durandy warned them.
"What happened? Was it his head?" Ava asked, knowing she would have to be the adult because her mother started wailing immediately, and her brother was just pulling his hair.
"Yes, Miss. It was a serious head trauma. He went into a coma, and I want to be realistic. I don't think he'll wake up," the doctor answered. "But you can go see him."
"Good, let's go, Mom," Ava said, pulling her distraught mother to the hospital room. Nathan followed quietly.
Seeing her father on the hospital bed covered in tubes and surrounded by beeping gadgets was intense, and it only made Annmarie more hysterical. Nathan remained almost catatonic. He sat on a chair in the corner and wouldn't move or speak.

Ava remained level-headed. Someone had to. The doctor let them have some privacy, but nurses came in and out to check some things every once in a while. A few hours later, Dr. Durandy was back.
"Hmmm, we need to discuss something," the doctor began. "Robert didn't have any directives. So, as a family, you must decide what to do."
"What do you mean?" Ava probed.
"His body will continue to deteriorate in that state, even with the nutrition we give him, and he currently can't breathe on his own," Dr. Durandy replied. "As a family, you must decide if we should continue these extreme measures or take him off support."
"NO! Isn't it too soon?" Annmarie cried. "His head just needs to heal, and he'll wake up."
"Mrs. Franklin," the doctor shook his head. "In this case, I don't think that will change much. But it's your decision. I'll leave you to debate."
Dr. Durandy left, and Ava looked at her family. "What should we do, Mom? Did you and Dad talk about this at all? Did he ever say what he would want if something happened?"
"Of course not! That's too morbid," Annmarie sniffled.

"Nathan, what do you think?" Ava asked her brother.
"Huh?" he snapped out of his trance. He stared at them as if he had been somewhere else. "I don't know."
"Hey! We have to decide!" Ava growled. "A life hooked up to machines is no life, Mom. We've known Dr. Durandy forever. I trust his judgment."
Annmarie had fresh tears in her eyes. "I trust him, too. I believe him. But I can't decide. It's up to you, kids."
"OK. Nathan, please tell me what you think," Ava insisted, grabbing her brother's shoulders and shaking.
"I don't know!" he replied, perplexed. "It feels like we already lost him."
Ava nodded. "OK. OK."
When Dr. Durandy returned half an hour later, Ava knew she had to make this request because her mother and brother couldn't say it themselves.
"Dr. Durandy, I think we need to take my father off life support," Ava stated, trying to remain calm. "We don't want him to keep suffering."
"ROBERT!" Annmarie yelled unexpectedly. Ava turned and saw her father's eyes wide open. Her mouth dropped as her father started smiling.

"I KNEW! I JUST KNEW!" Robert said, laughing and standing up. "I knew you would immediately let me die because you've always only cared about one thing: money! It was a test!"
Ava felt like her head would implode. The horror in her eyes had to be evident. Annmarie just jumped on the bed and hugged her husband. Nathan was shocked, but his face showed relief. None of them looked upset, although anger crawled up Ava's spine.
"You," she swallowed thickly, "did this to call me a gold digger?"
"YES! I always knew who you were! Money was always on your mind. You threw a tantrum when I wouldn't pay for stupid law school! You always wear good clothes and jewelry. No wonder you're 35 years old and unmarried! What man would put up with that?" her father scoffed.
Ava's anger wasn't red-hot as it had been the other times. This time, it was ice-cold and seething. "You were my father. You had already paid for Nathan's school. I thought it was unfair that he got special treatment," she began, her voice dead. "He always did."
"It was my money!"

"Yes, it's your money, you misogynistic pig. But don't worry. You all will never have to worry about me," she stated and turned to the others in the room. "Mom, you're a coward. Nathan, you're a loser. Dr. Durandy, I hope you rot in hell for going along with this plan. Good riddance to all of you."
With those words, Ava sauntered out of the room and out of their lives. She had no family anymore and no ties to that town, so she quit her job and moved to New York only a week later, ready to start her new life.
