According to Daily Mail on Friday, August 18, 2023, a horrifying video shows the moment a young woman fell to her death while attempting to escape from a seventh floor apartment during an earthquake in Bogotá, Colombia.
The woman, 26-year-old María Moreno, was visiting a friend's apartment when a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the capital city on Thursday afternoon.
This was followed by a 5.7 magnitude aftershock around 10 minutes later.
Moreno had been left sleeping in the apartment after her friend went to work in the morning.
Another tenant locked the door from the outside without realizing Moreno was still inside.
Trapped in the room, a panicked Moreno called relatives to say she was scared and couldn't get out the locked door, so she was going to try to climb out the window.
A neighbor across the street captured video of Moreno clinging to the side of the building facade.
But within seconds, she lost her grip and plunged to the sidewalk below. Moreno, a Venezuelan native, was declared dead at the scene.
The earthquakes caused damage and panic across Bogotá.
Videos show buildings swaying, glasses and bottles falling off shelves, and cracks forming in structures.
Some residents were trapped in elevators. A piece of ceiling at the House of Representatives building also fell, though no one was hurt.
Elsewhere in the capital, residents poured into the streets in fear.
One resident said "everything was moving" and people were screaming about the shaking.
The tremors were felt in other major Colombian cities like Medellin and Cali as well.
